    She was safe…

They were not murdered, they were killed in battle, against Darkfriends, which is about as worthy a death as you can get in WoT with Tarmon Gaidon on the horizon.  Throughout the series, there has been a problem of men fighting and dying over political causes, instead of uniting to face the Shadow.  Elayne has found a way to channel the willingness of men for fight over flags and crowns into the fight against the Shadow, and putting her own ass on the line to do it.

The (very likely not thousands of) men who died to recover Elayne from the Black Ajah are men who signed up to die to put the proper queen on the throne.  This, Death. Was. Better.

Secondly, since the subject of the meme is Elayne’s attitude, she did not believe she or her babes were in danger!

The gag … had been meant to keep her for shouting for help… Not that she would have; all that would have done would have been to sentence the men…to death … yet she refused to feel helpless.  After all, she was perfectly safe until her babies were born, and so were her babies.

Her situation seemed helpless, But Birgitte would not fail her.

The bond said Birgitte was aimed at her target and Birgitte never missed.

Men would be dying out there… Elayne wanted to weep for them.

Once she could spit out the gag… she said “What kept you?”

The fans of the series really need to get it through their heads that Min’s views are always right, and relying on them is sensible.  They need to accept that Elayne is right to do so, and accept that Elayne does, in fact, do so, and there is not going to be a future Wheel of Time book wherein she gets the trite comeuppance of 99% of characters who thought they knew what a prophecy, oracle or fortune meant, only to have it blow up in her face.

Ignoring realities of a story you don’t like is how we get bad TV shows.

Yes, she wasn’t in danger of dying, but the only reason for that is because those people came to save her. Min’s viewing takes that into account. If those people wouldn’t have done that, Min wouldn’t have had the viewing.

Elayne’s attitude of not believing she is in danger and not thinking about the danger she puts others in is precisely the problem. Min’s viewing doesn’t stop Elayne’s attitude from being incredibly reckless. Elayne got those people killed because she was recklessly overconfident. Min’s viewing also doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Elayne won’t be tortured or otherwise come to grievous bodily harm.

ALSO SHE DID GET COMEUPPANCE! PEOPLE DIED BECAUSE SHE ASSUMED SHE UNDERSTOOD THE VIEWING!

  • Tell us about the wellness to fash pipeline tho

    brendanicus

    headspace-hotel:

    cryptotheism:

Here’s a recent piece from the guardian on wellness communities and Qanon, so don’t take my word for it.

“Wellness” is not just alternative medicine, it is essentially a theory of the body which posits if something makes you feel better, you are better in some meaningful way. I would argue it one of the most commonly held nonreligious magical beliefs in the modern world.

Wellness as a concept has its genesis in the 1950s with “workplace wellness” programs, a sort of budget alternative to offering employee healthcare benefits. This was an era soaked in itinerant business preachers offering classes on things like “hypnosis at a management level” and “yoga to improve leadership abilities”. I am exaggerating for effect, but not by much.

The capitalist medical system regularly abandons people. We’ve all heard stories of profit driven pharmaceudical companies holding the ill hostage for extreme markup on life-saving medicines. People have real, legitimate, reasons to mistrust medical professionals.

Let’s say you have chronic pain, and everything your doctor offers you is either ineffective, expensive, or addictive. You are desperate for literally any release, so you start looking into other solutions. You will find an OCEAN of snake-oil salesmen willing to sell you “the secrets doctors don’t want you to know.”

What is frustrating, is that pain is actually partially psychological. Some wellness techniques may have an actual, medical, benefit on some patients. The worst thing a conspiracy theorist can have is a point. So now you actually do kinda feel better, and you have a sense of loyalty to the grifter selling you 300$ Sumerian Cock Oil Pills. These people are the core of the wellness industry. They are the examples that everyone else points to and says “Well it worked for them!”

Reactionary thought blooms in environments like this. If the medical industry can’t be trusted, what else can’t be trusted? At any given time, you are two clicks away from “vaccines cause autism.” Three clicks away from “Cavemen were 15 feet tall because they only ate meat.” And four clicks away from “The medical industry is controlled by The Jews to drain our wallets and keep us sick.” Echoes of Nazi attitudes towards German-Jewish doctors are a common backbeat.

Wellness itself is relatively harmless, (compared to the things it is adjacent to) but it acts as a sort of idealogical airport that exposes the curious to a deluge of potentially radicalizing communities. The longer you spend in communities like this, the higher the chance you’ll come across something that meshes perfectly with your own biases.

If y'all wanna learn more about wellness and pseudomedicine grifters, I highly recommend the podcast Maintenance Phase.

I cannot emphasize enough how true this is

however I would argue that the central principle is “purity” or avoiding contamination/corruption from a previously pure state

these people all loosely believe that the modern world is tainted with “toxins,” “chemicals,” heavy metals, preservatives, and a variety of things characterized as “unnatural” in some way

Disease and bad stuff is caused by things that are “unnatural” or otherwise related to some kind of behavioral deviation from what people did Traditionally

and it’s easy to see how this happened, there have been chemical disasters and pollution and contamination of rivers and soils, and pesticides and herbicides are everywhere, and it makes sense that people (especially without the scientific knowledge to understand what makes a substance safe or not) would get a little paranoid

however you can also see how this can lead to fascism—the idea is that the world was better before “modernity,” and we should go back to what is simpler and more natural, and what feels traditional feels purer, and when so much in the world is wrong you want to come up with reasons why, and that can lead to the conspiracy stuff

Just about any ideology or lifestyle that involves limiting or controlling what goes into your body can pull you into this kind of thing

So fun story about my roommate

so last semester, my new roommate, without consulting anyone else, put up these stupid wall stickers. and I had to live with em alllll year.

A set of wall stickers reading: Live every moment, laugh every day, love beyond words.ALT
a set of wall stickers, reading: Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. If you believe in yourself anything is possible.ALT
    image

    (ignore the tapestry, that’s mine)

so, end of the school year starts coming up, we’re gonna have to take the damn things down anyway. so I decide to have some fun with it.

on sunday, while roomie was away at work, I took the stickers off the wall and started cutting up the letters. and this was what she found when she came home.

    image
    image
    image

this was just above the couch, the first thing you’d see upon walking in the door. and my favorite of all, in the corner where the couch met the wall:

    image

the next day, while I was in class, she came home and saw it. and promptly began acting like I did not exist.

It was the greatest week I’d had since moving in.

but only a week. one day, I texted our collective roommate group chat that I was taking an online test, and that I’d need quiet for about 2 hours or so. and when I finished, I left my room to find bare walls where my art once was, and a ball of letters in the trash can.

    image

so I fished it out. and left this.

    image

but I wasn’t done quite yet. I fished out a couple favorites and put them back up in my room (partly bc I had gotten a bit attached to nut,)

    image

now, you might notice that “tit” has lost its “s”. that s now serves a greater purpose:

forming the word “penis” that I hid on the wall behind the couch before I moved out.

suffice to say, that roommate hasn’t talked to me since.

I’m sorry but it’s literally impossible to ignore the tapestry

I love that you try to make your roommate’s milquetoast inspo art out to be the crime here while they also had to ignore that tapestry. Like I think the imposition goes both ways here.

if you’re a new tumblr user from tiktok or IG or something and only like posts and dont reblog them yeah people will think you’re a bot and block you but you will also make this website actively worse. they want “algorithmic” users like you, served recommended posts through likes, not people who just follow each other and respond to the direct chronological feed. there is a reason this website is still better than the rest, even with all its problems, do not ruin this

ok i need to make this clearer: if you do not reblog posts and only like them you are contributing to this site actively getting worse and becoming like all the apps you hate. keep likes to things you just wanna keep off your blog. reblog everything else. ESPECIALLY fanart, which always needs a reblog.

and FYI: what i’m saying here is backed up by tumblr themselves. they admit this publicly.

    image
    image

if you want a good RECENT (as of the end of February 2022) overview of what is going on behind the scenes at tumblr, it is basically what i’ve been saying for years: the core staff is tiny, constantly not being listened to when they advocate for us, the community, and working there is a nightmare:

The inside story of how Tumblr lost its way
And how it can find itself again for a new generation.
    Mashable

Reblogging to encourage people instead of only liking is really not that fucking hard if you dont want people to be discouraged cuz their stuff get zero interactions and 99% useless likes and be driven off the Platform.

Thank yall for this! I thought reblogging wasnt good because that it just puts stuff out there that is already out there, but now i am going to reblog bc I learned and stuff ig. IDK what i was going to say

ig thanks bc now im not scared to reblog out of fear of hate
